Monsters & Memories beginner guide: your first group session
Prepare your first M&M session with a compatible character plan, basic inventory checks, meeting directions, and a realistic camp goal.
Your first Monsters & Memories group should leave you with a character you understand and a route you can repeat. Start with a small goal. Meeting friends, learning the basic interface, and completing a manageable session is more useful than following a leveling schedule you cannot yet sustain.
Choose with the group in mind
Confirm the same server with friends before creating a character. Read the official classes and races pages together. Race and class choices interact, so check the combination rather than making two independent decisions.
Ask what the group expects you to do. You do not need to select a fashionable class merely to be welcome, but friends need to know which responsibilities they can reliably cover. Our class planning guide gives you questions to discuss without pretending to rank every class.
Learn the essential controls before departure
The official New Player Guide explains inventory, abilities, combat, and NPC conversations. It identifies I for inventory and B for the ability book. Use those references to inspect what you have and prepare your abilities before the group waits for you.
Read your starting note and follow the introductory instructions. Ask for help when a step is unclear. A group session is a poor time to discover that an important ability was never prepared.
Ask for directions you can follow
Agree on a meeting landmark and a contact who can explain the route. The official guide describes speaking with guards for directions and using landmarks. Write down enough of the route to return, rather than relying on a friend to lead you every time.
Tell the organizer if travel will take longer than expected. Gathering time is part of the group’s commitment. If you become separated, ask where to regroup instead of guessing your way deeper into unfamiliar territory.
Make the first camp a learning session
Choose an objective, planned end time, and a leader. Ask who will pull, handle additional enemies, and call a pause. Agree on what happens when a member needs to leave or the group cannot continue safely.
For the first session, keep reward rules simple and explicit. Check item restrictions before promising a trade. Record the next useful preparation step afterward. The goal is to make the second outing easier to join.
Continue with a practical plan
Read the camp and guild guide for travel briefs, role coverage, replacements, and named-target loot. Keep character-sheet readings in context rather than comparing an invented gear score.
