WoW Forever Mage talent builds: Arcane Blast, Heating Up and Ice Lance
How Forever's Mage trees play for leveling, dungeons and raids, where Frostfire Bolt fits, which milestones define each spec, and what changed in beta.
Mages in WoW Forever keep their job as ranged damage dealers with Polymorph, raid buffs, food and water. What changes is how each tree plays. Arcane builds around Arcane Blast and Missile Barrage, Fire chases faster Pyroblasts with Heating Up, and Frost gets Ice Lance and Fingers of Frost. A new baseline spell, Frostfire Bolt, connects Fire and Frost.
These are build directions, not point-by-point optimal builds. Talents are still changing in beta. Plan your own points in the WoW Forever Mage talent calculator.
How Forever talents work
Talents start at level 10, with one-point milestones at 11, 16, 21 and 31 points. Talents are changed at a class trainer in a major city, and dual specialization unlocks at level 40. Source: Blizzard's Mage and Shaman class deep dive.
What every Mage gets
- Frostfire Bolt is learned at level 40. It counts as both Fire and Frost, so most talents for either school apply. It has a 3-second cast, large upfront damage, and a damage-over-time with a slow. It uses your higher spell damage bonus and the target's lower resistance.
- Comprehension is a new Mage-only minor tradeskill for reading scrolls dropped by creatures, which grant various benefits.
- Cone of Cold lasts a shorter time, part of Blizzard's effort against kiting large packs for farming.
- Mage Armor gives more Spirit-based mana regeneration.
- Magic Attunement is baseline.
Arcane: Arcane Blast and Missile Barrage
- Arcane Focus now raises Arcane hit chance.
- Arcane Concentration procs less often from much lower-rank spells, and Arcane Meditation now requires it.
- Arcane Blast is the 11-point milestone. It deals damage on a 2.5-second cast, then increases the damage of your other spells and its own mana cost, stacking up to four times.
- Arcane Impact raises crit for all Arcane spells.
- Missile Barrage is the 16-point milestone. Arcane Blast, Fireball, Frostbolt or Frostfire Bolt can make your next Arcane Missiles channel twice as fast for free. Arcane Blast has double the chance.
- Arcane Mind now raises Intellect and Arcane crit damage.
- Improved Counterspell always adds a short Silence with one point.
- Arcane Power now requires Presence of Mind.
Direction: Arcane is about managing Arcane Blast stacks against your mana, then spending Missile Barrage procs. Because Missile Barrage also triggers from Fireball, Frostbolt and Frostfire Bolt, a few Arcane points can support a Fire or Frost build too.
Fire: Heating Up and Pyroblast
- Wake of Fire shortens Fire Blast's cooldown and gives your next Fire Blast a big crit bonus after a kill.
- Incineration raises crit for Fire Blast, Scorch, Ice Lance and Arcane Blast.
- Improved Fireball also shortens Frostfire Bolt's cast.
- Ignite is now a separate debuff per Mage, so it no longer loses damage when several Mages crit together.
- Improved Scorch now helps only the casting Mage.
- Heating Up requires Pyroblast. Crits from Fireball, Frostfire Bolt, Fire Blast or Scorch cut your next Pyroblast's cast time by 25% per stack, up to three stacks for a 1.5-second Pyroblast.
- Blast Wave no longer requires Pyroblast.
The October 1 beta notes renamed Hot Streak to Heating Up and cut Combustion from four charges to three.
Direction: Fire is a crit-driven build that turns crits into fast Pyroblasts. Blast Wave without Pyroblast makes a lighter Fire build for dungeon packs possible.
Frost: Ice Lance and Fingers of Frost
- Elemental Precision now raises hit chance for Fire and Frost spells.
- Permafrost extends chill effects by a percentage.
- Ice Lance is the 11-point milestone. It is instant, with low damage that triples against frozen targets.
- Ice Block is now the 16-point milestone.
- Shatter no longer requires Improved Frost Nova.
- Fingers of Frost requires Ice Lance. Chill effects can grant charges that make your next spells treat the target as frozen.
- Cold Snap is now the 21-point milestone, and its cooldown is 10 minutes.
- Improved Blizzard slows less than before, at most 40%.
- Winter's Chill now helps only the casting Mage, and its crit bonus applies only to Frostbolt and Ice Lance.
Direction: Frost builds now revolve around Fingers of Frost and Ice Lance instead of just Frostbolt. Ice Block at 16 points is Frost's defensive milestone. Blizzard deliberately weakened the old Blizzard and Cone of Cold kiting, so do not plan a farming build around Classic numbers.
About the calculator data
The GuildManager calculator uses BlizzCon demo data dated September 13, 2026. Since then, Blizzard's beta notes renamed Hot Streak to Heating Up and cut Combustion's charges. Spell rank values for Frostbolt, Fireball and Arcane Missiles were also rebalanced on October 8. Check current values before you compare builds.
For officers
Mages bring Polymorph, raid and party buffs, and food and water. Forever's per-Mage Ignite, Improved Scorch and Winter's Chill mean you no longer stack Mages to share one debuff. Ask each Mage which tree they plan to raid in, since that changes what they need from gear and the group. Our raid sizes and roster planning guide covers the buff changes.
