Aion 2 dungeons explained: what each activity is for
Sealed Dungeons, Expeditions, Transcendence, Nightmare, Ascension Trial, and Sanctuary all serve different progression goals.
Choose the dungeon that gives you what you need
Aion 2 puts several activities under the broad idea of dungeons, but they are not interchangeable. Some are short solo clears. Some are repeatable group runs. Others are progression checks built around a single boss.
The useful question is not "Which dungeon is best?" It is "Which activity pays toward my next upgrade?"
This guide uses the regional client and NCSOFT updates available on September 12, 2026. Names, unlock requirements, reward limits, and available encounters may differ on global. Check the activity panel before spending a limited entry or reward claim.
The activity types at a glance
| Activity | Group | Main reason to run it |
|---|---|---|
| Sealed Dungeon | Solo | Exploration progress, early materials, and character growth |
| Stronghold | Solo | Regional progression and growth rewards |
| Nightmare | Solo boss challenge | Boss practice, milestones, and its own reward track |
| Ascension Trial | Solo challenge | Push increasingly difficult stages for progression rewards |
| Daily Dungeon | Solo or casual | Target a daily resource, including pet growth materials |
| Expedition | Party | Equipment, Kina, and regular group progression |
| Transcendence | Party | Harder encounters and Arcana progression |
| Sanctuary | Large group | Coordinated boss fights and high-tier rewards |
These labels describe the role of each activity. The exact reward table changes with seasons and regions.
Sealed Dungeons and Strongholds reward exploration
Sealed Dungeons are short solo encounters found across the world. Clear the ones along your leveling route instead of saving every one for later. They contribute to progression that a straight story rush can miss.
Strongholds fill a similar place in regional progression. Both are tied closely enough to exploration that the cleanest approach is to finish nearby objectives while you already have the map open.
Before entering, check the reward preview. If the activity gives a Daevanion Crystal, equipment upgrade material, or another resource you currently need, it belongs near the top of your list. If it pays toward something you have not unlocked, make a note and move on.
Read our first-week guide for a route that combines story progress with these side objectives.
Nightmare is its own solo mode
Nightmare is not the hard setting for another dungeon. It is a separate solo boss activity with its own stages and rewards.
Treat each attempt as a mechanics check. If you survive comfortably but hit a damage wall, review your rotation, Daevanion effects, Arcana, and equipment. If one attack keeps killing you, another upgrade attempt will not fix the missed mechanic. Learn the tell and practise the response.
Regional updates have changed Nightmare bosses, stage rules, and clear options several times. Trust the current client over an old boss list. Check which stage grants rewards and whether clearing a higher stage includes earlier rewards before spending time on every tier.
Ascension Trial measures solo progress
Ascension Trial is another solo challenge, but it is structured around a ladder of encounters and difficulties. Use it to see where your character stops progressing cleanly.
Do not burn consumables on a stage you cannot yet control. A few sensible upgrades may be cheaper than repeating a bad attempt. Return after improving a skill path, core equipment, or another permanent system.
Daily Dungeons target a resource
Daily Dungeons are short activities built around specific rewards. Odylium Repository is associated with pet and Genus progression in regional versions. Other daily activities may focus on Kina or another material.
The name "daily" is the warning. Open the reward and reset information before choosing something else. If a missed claim cannot roll forward, clear that activity while it is available.
Our pet and Genus Insight guide explains what those materials improve.
Expeditions are your regular group dungeons
Expeditions are the familiar party dungeon format. They are a regular source of equipment, Kina, and crafting materials, with harder versions offering better rewards.
NCSOFT removed entry tickets from Expedition and Transcendence in the regional Chapter 1 update. Rewards moved to Odyle Energy. That means entry and reward eligibility are separate questions. You may be able to help with another clear after using your claims, but you should know whether your own reward cube can still be opened.
Check how Aion 2 loot and Odyle Energy work before organising repeated runs.
Transcendence is tied closely to Arcana
Transcendence dungeons are harder party encounters and an important source of Arcana materials. The useful reward depends on the current dungeon and season. Some Arcana parts and crafting crystals come from a specific Transcendence encounter.
Do not judge an Arcana reward by rarity alone. Check its part, set, effects, and whether it completes something you already use. The Arcana and Stigmas guide covers that decision.
Sanctuary expects a coordinated group
Sanctuary is Aion 2's large-group boss format. Recent regional Sanctuaries include Corroded Decontamination Facility and Chalice of Muspel, but global availability needs to be confirmed in the client.
NCSOFT expanded regional Sanctuary groups to ten players in Chapter 1. Older guides may still describe eight-player raids. Use our current party and raid size guide when setting up the roster.
Before the run, agree on roles, start time, and whether the group is learning or clearing. Confirm that everyone meets the displayed requirements and still has the reward eligibility they expect. A roster that looks full can still fail if half the group planned around outdated requirements.
Build a weekly dungeon plan
Start with deadlines, then work backward:
- Claim daily rewards that expire first.
- Finish weekly objectives that need a group before the last day.
- Spend remaining Odyle Energy on the activity that pays toward your current upgrade.
- Use unlimited or practice attempts after limited rewards are covered.
For legion runs, publish the activity name, required item level, party size, and expected reward status in the signup. That gives members enough information to decide whether the run is worth their time.
