EverQuest II guild guide: alternate characters and raid coverage
Prepare an EQII roster around server rules, expansion progress, reliable class coverage, and clear loot expectations.
An EverQuest II guild often has more capable characters than available players. Planning begins by separating the member from their main and alternate characters. A second healer character is not a second person available on raid night.
Name the server and progression context
Recruitment should identify the server, its rules, your current expansion or progression target, and the nights your group meets. Ask applicants which character they expect to bring, which roles they can cover, and which encounters they have practiced.
Check server-specific announcements before publishing entry requirements. Advice written for another progression environment can send recruits toward the wrong preparation.
Build coverage around available people
Assign each confirmed member one character for the session. List alternate coverage as a contingency, then identify who would fill the vacancy created by a switch. Moving your only available tank to a healer does not actually solve a missing seat.
Keep substitutes informed about the content planned and the point at which they will be called. If a member needs to leave early, arrange the handoff before the pull rather than discovering it mid-session.
Publish a loot agreement members can repeat
Specify main-character priority, alternate-character eligibility, attendance requirements, and how disputes are reviewed. If you use DKP, tell members how points are earned and spent, and whether balances are shared across characters.
Do not promise distribution methods the encounter or server does not support. Check item restrictions in game. A recorded priority is a guild decision, not a way around binding rules.
Keep readiness separate from blame
Ask for the preparation relevant to the planned encounter: equipment context, progression prerequisites, and expected supplies. When a run stalls, document the missing capability or mechanic before judging the whole roster.
After the session, save the next target and any required character changes. Make the next signup ask for the character that will actually attend. That small habit keeps returning members and alternate characters from gradually making the roster unreadable.
Put the plan into practice
